Makkah Weather & Best Time to Visit: A Full Guide

Makkah sits in a hot desert climate, which means very hot and long summers, mild pleasant winters, and only a small amount of rain each year. If you are planning a pilgrimage, a family visit, or simply a trip to the holy city, understanding the weather month by month will help you pack smart, plan your outdoor time, and stay comfortable. In this guide, Saudi Living breaks down what to expect across the seasons and when the weather is most forgiving.

The overall climate at a glance

Annual rainfall in Makkah is low, generally under about 200 mm, with most of it falling between November and January. Across a typical year, temperatures range roughly from about 16°C on cool winter nights to around 42°C on the hottest summer days. Readings rarely drop below the mid-teens or climb above the mid-40s, though extreme records can approach or slightly exceed 47°C.

Month-by-month temperatures

  • January: The coolest month. Daytime highs around 26–29°C and nights around 16–19°C — among the most comfortable conditions of the year.
  • February–March: Highs rise to about 29–34°C with lows around 17–22°C, still moderate.
  • April–May: Daytime highs climb to roughly 36–41°C, with nights around 24–29°C. Heat becomes intense for long outdoor stays.
  • June–August: Peak summer. Highs often reach 40–43°C, mean temperatures stay above 33°C, and nights hover around 28–30°C. Long, sweltering, and mostly dry.
  • September–October: Still hot, with highs near 39–40°C and lows around 26–27°C, easing gradually by late October.
  • November–December: Pleasant again, with highs around 30–32°C and lows around 21–22°C, plus some of the year's limited rain, especially in November.

The best time to visit

For milder weather, the best window is generally November to March, when daytime highs typically sit in the 18–30°C range and nights turn cooler. This makes religious activities, walking, and city visits far more comfortable.

Within this cooler season, December to February — and especially January and February — are often the most comfortable months, thanks to the mildest daytime temperatures and relatively cool nights.

Rain and what to expect

November is usually the wettest month and may bring short bursts of rain. Even so, total rainfall stays low and rarely disrupts travel plans. A light rain jacket is worth packing for late autumn visits, but you shouldn't let rain dominate your scheduling.

Visiting in the hot months

Roughly from May through September, midday outdoor activities and long walks can be genuinely dangerous because of extreme heat. For 2026 specifically, parts of the Makkah region are forecast to run about 1.5–1.6°C above normal during June–August, adding to heat stress in peak daylight hours. If you travel during these months:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity between late morning and mid-afternoon.
  • Drink water regularly and carry a bottle with you.
  • Wear light, breathable, loose clothing and use an umbrella or hat for shade.
  • Plan longer walks for early morning or after sunset.

Practical packing tips

  • Winter (Nov–Mar): Light layers for the day, a light jacket or shawl for cooler evenings.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Lightweight breathable fabrics, sun protection, and a refillable water bottle.
  • Year-round: Comfortable walking shoes, as you'll cover a lot of ground on foot.

Whenever you go, check the latest official forecasts before travelling and adjust your outdoor timing to the day's conditions. With the right timing and preparation, a visit to Makkah can be both spiritually rewarding and physically comfortable.
