If you drive in Saudi Arabia, sooner or later you'll need to check and settle a traffic fine. Two names come up constantly: نجم (Najm) and أبشر (Absher). It's easy to confuse them, but they do very different jobs — Najm handles accident reports and insurance claims, while Absher is where you actually view and pay government traffic violations. This guide from سعودي ليفنج walks you through the full process clearly, whether you're a resident, a citizen, or a visitor.
Najm vs. Absher: what each one actually does
Understanding the difference saves a lot of confusion:
- نجم (Najm) is for reporting road accidents and processing insurance claims. When you have a collision, you file a Najm report to establish fault and move the insurance side forward. Najm does not collect government traffic fines.
- أبشر (Absher) is the government platform where your traffic record lives. Any violation — a Saher speeding camera, running a red light, or a fine that results from an accident — appears here and is paid through Absher or your bank.
So even after a Najm accident report, any resulting traffic violation is settled separately through Absher or banking channels.
Where you can pay traffic fines
The Kingdom offers several official channels, all linked to the same traffic record:
- Absher Individuals (web and app) under Services → Traffic → Traffic Violations → Pay.
- SADAD through your Saudi bank under Government Payments → Traffic Violations.
- Bank mobile apps and internet banking, using the traffic violations biller (usually listed as Ministry of Interior – Traffic Violations).
- ATMs under Government Payments → Traffic Fines.
- Unified payment portals linked to the same fine record.
How to pay through Absher, step by step
Absher is the most direct route because you can see every violation and its exact amount before paying:
- Log in to Absher Individuals on the app or website.
- Go to Services → Traffic → Traffic Violations / Query Traffic Violations.
- Review the list of violations, each showing the exact fine amount in ريال سعودي and its status (unpaid or paid).
- Select one or more violations and choose Pay.
- Pick your payment method: a linked bank account via SADAD, mada or credit card through the payment gateway, or a redirect to your bank app.
- Confirm and save your payment reference or receipt.
The status usually updates to Paid shortly after the transaction completes.
Paying through your bank app or SADAD
If you prefer to stay inside your banking app, the flow is very similar:
- Log in to your Saudi bank app or internet banking.
- Go to Payments → Government Payments and Refunds → Traffic Violations (wording varies by bank).
- For registered violators, enter your ID or Iqama and select Traffic Violations; to pay a specific fine, enter the violation number.
- Confirm the due amount shown in ريال سعودي and pay via account balance, mada, or credit card.
Because the banking system syncs with the traffic system, the violation will then show as paid in Absher too.
What if you're a visitor without an Absher account?
Visitors can still check and pay fines without a full Absher profile:
- Use the Query Traffic Violation for Visitor service by entering your border number and the violation number to view and pay online.
- Alternatively, use bank or payment portals that accept a border number and violation ID before payment.
This matters especially before leaving the Kingdom, since unpaid fines can create complications at departure.
Fees, receipts, and smart tips
- The amount you see in Absher or through SADAD is the official fine in ريال سعودي. There's no extra government service fee for paying online, beyond any standard bank or card processing charge.
- Always save the payment reference or receipt until the status clearly shows Paid.
- Check your record periodically, since Saher camera fines can appear without any physical notice.
- If a fine looks incorrect, review the objection/appeal options in the traffic service before paying, as paying may affect your ability to dispute it.
For the latest exact fine values, service names, and any procedural updates, always confirm directly on Absher or your official Saudi bank channel, since menus and figures are updated from time to time.
