The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has ordered 94 additional train sets for قطار الرياض, in a major expansion aimed at increasing capacity across the network's six lines. The move will raise the metro fleet from 183 to 277 train sets, with contracts valued at approximately SAR 5.5 billion.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in batches in 2028. Each batch will undergo testing and operational trials before entering passenger service, ensuring reliability and safety before the new trains carry riders.
Overall, the expansion is expected to lift network capacity by about 60%. The additional trains will be distributed across the six lines, with the largest gains on the Red Line at 142% and the Yellow Line at 116%. The Blue Line is set to see a 60% increase, the Orange Line 27%, and the Purple Line 16%.
Why it matters for residents
For commuters in الرياض, the expansion promises shorter waits and more room during peak hours as passenger numbers grow. The contracts cover train manufacturing, systems and equipment, maintenance, training, and technical and operational services, supporting long-term reliability of the network.
No new passenger fare, ticket price, application procedure, or validity period was announced alongside the fleet expansion. Existing ticketing and access arrangements remain unchanged for now. سعودي ليفنج will share further details as the delivery and testing phases progress.
