Riyadh Metro Adds 94 Trains in SAR 5.5B Deal

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has awarded contracts worth about SAR 5.5 billion (roughly USD 1.5 billion) to supply 94 additional train sets for the Riyadh Metro, with the first deliveries expected to begin in phases from 2028.

The contracts went to Siemens and Alstom and cover train manufacturing, onboard systems, equipment, integration, and related services. Once delivered, the expansion will raise the metro fleet from 183 to 277 trains, with the new units distributed across the network's six lines.

Authorities expect the added capacity to increase passenger capacity by approximately 60%, helping the system handle rising demand as more residents rely on the metro for daily travel across the capital.

Deliveries will arrive in stages, and each phase will undergo testing and operational trials before the trains enter passenger service. This phased approach is intended to maintain reliability while the fleet grows.

For commuters, the long-term benefit is clear: more trains should mean shorter waits, less crowding, and smoother journeys across Riyadh. The procurement relates only to expanding the fleet—there is no change to passenger fares, application fees, permits, or validity periods tied to this deal.
