Saudi Women's Sports Participation Keeps Rising

Saudi women's participation in sports continues to climb across competitive events, school programs and professional leagues, pointing to a broader shift in how girls and women take part in physical activity nationwide.

One of the clearest signs came from the 2026 Riyadh Marathon, where Saudi women made up 25.8% of participants, a notable rise from 18.7% in 2022. The jump reflects growing access to large-scale public sporting events and increasing interest among women in endurance and recreational sports.

At the grassroots level, more than 70,000 girls now take part in school sports leagues, supported by over 1,000 coaches working to develop women's sports. This expanding base is helping build a pipeline of talent while making organized physical activity a routine part of school life.

Building a professional pathway

Structured competition has advanced quickly in recent years. The Saudi Women's Football League was established in 2020 and became a national competition in 2021, followed by the launch of the Saudi Women's Premier League in 2022. Together, these leagues give female athletes a clearer route from school and community sport to top-tier competition.

For residents and families across the Kingdom, the trend means more opportunities to join races, community events and organized leagues, as well as greater visibility for women in sport. The combination of mass participation events, school programs and professional leagues suggests that women's sports in Saudi Arabia are set to keep growing in both numbers and reach.
