Seven Red-Necked Ostrich Chicks Hatch in Rafha Reserve

Seven red-necked ostrich chicks have hatched at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve in Rafha, in northern Saudi Arabia, in a development officials describe as a milestone for the Kingdom's wildlife reintroduction efforts. The hatching took place as part of a wider species reintroduction program running in the reserve.

The chicks' natural hatching and survival are seen as a sign that the birds have moved beyond the initial release and acclimatization stages into successful adaptation and reproduction in the wild. Authorities say the outcome demonstrates the suitability of the reserve's desert habitat and the effectiveness of protection and field-monitoring work carried out for the species.

Red-necked ostriches had been locally extinct in parts of Saudi Arabia for roughly a century. They are now being reintroduced through coordinated conservation programs across several royal reserves, including Imam Turki bin Abdullah, Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed (Rawdat Khuraim), NEOM Nature Reserve, Mahazat as-Sayd, and Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve.

The seven chicks were among more than 90 recorded wildlife births at the Rafha reserve in the first quarter of 2026, reflecting a busy season across the Kingdom's protected areas. Reintroduction work since late 2021 has involved establishing founder groups, providing secure fenced areas and monitored desert habitats, and running specialized breeding programs to produce eggs and chicks adapted to local conditions. In associated reserves, breeding efforts have produced clutches of 12 eggs, with multiple chicks hatching naturally between 2024 and 2026.

The red-necked ostrich is being used as a biological replacement for the extinct Arabian ostrich in the Kingdom's rewilding strategy. It is one of around 12 of 23 planned native species being systematically reintroduced under long-term ecosystem restoration plans spanning royal reserves that cover more than 24,000 square kilometers, part of the country's broader efforts to restore its natural heritage.
