ZATCA Tax and Zakat Registration: Steps and Fees

Businesses and individuals in Saudi Arabia can register for Value Added Tax (VAT), corporate income tax, and Zakat through the electronic Taxpayer Portal on the official tax and Zakat authority's website — and there is no government fee for any of these registrations.

Registration begins after completing commercial registration with the Ministry of Commerce. Once an establishment is registered, a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is generated automatically. This number is then used to complete VAT, corporate income tax, and Zakat registration on the e-portal.

Fees and thresholds

VAT, corporate income tax, and Zakat registration are all free of charge (SAR 0), and the VAT registration certificate is issued at no cost. VAT registration becomes mandatory when a business's annual taxable supplies reach SAR 375,000 or more. Voluntary registration is available for businesses with annual taxable supplies of SAR 187,500 or more but below SAR 375,000. The standard VAT rate applied to taxable supplies is 15%.

How to register

For establishments, the steps are: complete commercial registration and obtain the commercial registration data; a TIN is created automatically; log in to the Taxpayer Portal; go to General Services then Registration for VAT; fill in the form with entity details, activities, turnover, and contact information; then submit. After approval, a confirmation and VAT registration certificate are issued through the portal — usually within minutes to a few business days.

Individuals can log in to the portal and select the VAT option to begin. Registration is handled entirely through the tax and Zakat portal, so applicants should complete their commercial registration first and keep their TIN ready before starting.

Understanding these steps and thresholds helps residents and business owners stay compliant and avoid penalties, while confirming that the registration process itself carries no government fees.
