Sixteen Bangladeshi workers died in a fire that swept through a sofa and furniture factory in Riyadh on Sunday, 9 August 2026. The blaze broke out in the Musa Sanaiya industrial area, where the facility was used for furniture upholstery work.
Saudi civil defence said the fire took place at an unlicensed facility. Once crews brought the flames under control and extinguished them, the required regulatory procedures were completed at the site.
Authorities in Bangladesh said their foreign ministry was working to identify the victims, arrange the repatriation of the bodies, and provide government assistance and compensation to the affected families.
Why it matters
Industrial areas across Riyadh host large numbers of workshops and small manufacturing units, many of them staffed by expat workers. Incidents like this underline the importance of proper licensing, fire-safety equipment, and clear emergency exits in workplaces.
Saudi Living extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Workers and business owners are reminded to ensure their facilities meet all safety and licensing requirements, and to keep emergency contact numbers accessible in case of fire or other hazards.
