Cabinet Approves Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal Reserve

The Cabinet has approved the creation of the Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal Nature Reserve, a new protected area covering 4,310 square kilometres west of Riyadh. The decision, issued in September 2026, places the reserve under the supervision of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City.

The reserve falls within the geographic scope of Dhurma and Al-Muzahimiyah governorates and the areas between them. It lies roughly 20 to 35 kilometres from central Riyadh, making it one of the closest large protected zones to the capital. Within its boundaries are about 22 valleys and around 3,200 farms.

Its landscapes reflect the character of the central region, including parts of the Tuwaiq Mountains, sand dunes, and traditional rural environments. A board of directors has been formed for the reserve, with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City tasked with its development and management. Stated objectives cover environmental protection, restoring ecosystems, and supporting economic and social development in the surrounding area.

What residents should know

For residents of Riyadh, the reserve signals a long-term commitment to conserving natural spaces close to the city while opening the door to future recreational and eco-tourism opportunities.

At this stage, however, no opening date for public visits has been announced. Officials have not yet published any entry or ticket fees, permit requirements, procedures, or validity periods for passes, and no specific digital platform has been named for bookings or payments. No visitor centres, trails, or tourism services have been launched inside the reserve, and no implementation regulations detailing permitted activities or zoning have been made public.

Saudi Living will share further details on access, timing, and services once official information is released.
