Civil Defense Urges Home Gas Leak Detectors in KSA

Civil Defense authorities in Saudi Arabia have launched a nationwide safety advisory in 2026 urging residents to install gas leak detectors in their homes to reduce the risk of fires and protect lives and property. The guidance is being shared through official media and social media channels and targets households across the Kingdom.

The advisory recommends placing gas leak detection devices in kitchens and any areas where LPG or natural gas is used. Residents are also reminded of the correct steps to take if they suspect a leak: avoid using electrical switches or any source of ignition, close the gas valve tightly, calmly open windows and doors to ventilate the space, and evacuate the area before calling for help.

Emergency numbers depend on the region. Residents should dial 911 in Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh and the Eastern Province, and 998 in all other regions.

What it means for households

The current campaign is advisory in nature, encouraging installation rather than imposing a legal requirement. There is no mandatory registration, permit, official fee, or government inspection scheme for household gas detectors reported this year, and no online government service is needed to buy or install one.

For families weighing the cost, simple plug-in LPG or natural gas detectors for home kitchens generally cost around 64 to 300 SAR including VAT, depending on brand and features such as Wi-Fi, app control or a digital display. Combined gas and carbon monoxide alarms typically range from about 75 to 500 SAR, with some premium imported models exceeding 700 SAR. Professional multi-gas detectors used by technicians can range far higher.

Detectors are widely available through major online retailers and safety-equipment suppliers within the Kingdom, with nationwide delivery. Authorities stress the importance of keeping any device functional and following the manufacturer's instructions, as a small, low-cost investment can provide an early warning that saves lives.
