Diriyah, on the northwestern edge of Riyadh, has become one of the Kingdom's top heritage destinations, blending the mud-brick history of the First Saudi State with a modern dining and lifestyle scene. Here is what visitors need to know before heading there.
The centerpiece is the At-Turaif UNESCO World Heritage Site, overlooking Wadi Hanifah. Pedestrian entry is free, while main visitor parking costs SAR 30 for the first three hours and SAR 10 for each additional hour. Access is through a security checkpoint and by scanning a digital barcode at the main gate, with tickets usually pre-booked via the official Diriyah booking platforms.
Inside the historic district, visitors can explore Salwa Palace, the largest palace complex of the First Saudi State, alongside the Diriyah Museum, the Museum of Saudi Life, the Military Museum and the Horse Museum. A typical visit lasts between 1.5 and 3 hours, and the area is open daily, with most guided tours scheduled in the late afternoon and evening. Peak season runs from October to March. Many photographers recommend the golden hour around sunset to capture the illuminated mud-brick walls.
Bujairi Terrace dining
Directly facing At-Turaif on the eastern side of Wadi Hanifah, Bujairi Terrace is Diriyah's main dining and lifestyle district. Pedestrian access is free, with car parking at SAR 30 for the first three hours and SAR 10 Restaurants and cafés generally open from late afternoon until past midnight, busiest on evenings and weekends.
Prices vary widely: casual Saudi cafés offer mains around SAR 60–120 and specialty coffee at SAR 18–35, mid-range international brands run SAR 80–180, while fine-dining set menus can reach SAR 250–400 or more Notable venues include Flamingo Room by tashas, with African-inspired mains at SAR 180–320, and Angelina Riyadh, known for its French pastries and hot chocolate at SAR 35–60.
For families and residents alike, Diriyah offers a rare mix of history and hospitality, making it a worthwhile day out especially during the cooler months.
