First-Time Saudi Passports Need No Activation

Saudi Arabia's passport authority has clarified that a Saudi passport issued for the first time does not require any activation after it is received, and is ready for immediate use. The clarification covers first passports issued to citizens, including children and infants.

For renewed passports, the process is different. Holders must have their previous passport checked and the new passport activated. This can be done at passport offices, branches, or designated offices located at international ports of entry. No prior appointment is needed for either checking or activation, and the only document required is the previous passport.

Residents and citizens can verify the activation status of a passport digitally through أبشر. New passports can also be issued through the platform via My Services → Passports → Issuance of Saudi Passport.

How to apply and current fees

The application steps through أبشر include paying the fee from a bank account, selecting the passport validity period, accepting the conditions and declarations, choosing a delivery option, entering the delivery address, reviewing the details, and submitting the request.

Fees are set at 300 ريال سعودي for a passport valid for five years, and 600 ريال سعودي for a passport valid for ten years. Applicants can choose the validity period that suits them at the time of issuance.

The update matters for families in particular, as it removes an extra step for first-time passports issued to children and infants, making travel documents ready to use as soon as they are received. Checking status through أبشر also helps holders confirm their passport is valid before travel.
