Getting Around AlUla: Transport Options Guide

AlUla (العلا) spreads its headline attractions across a wide desert landscape — from AlUla Old Town and Ashar Valley to the ancient site of Hegra — so planning how you move around matters as much as deciding what to see. The good news is that visitors have several options, from organized tours and hop-on, hop-off shuttles to taxis, rental cars, and private transfers. Here is Saudi Living's practical breakdown of how to get around AlUla and what each option typically costs.

Start with the AlUla App

The official AlUla App was launched as a unified digital gateway for the destination's services and information, and it's the first thing you should download before arriving. It brings local transport information together in one place, so you can check shuttle routes, plan connections between visitor areas, and stay updated on what's running during your visit.

Hop-on, hop-off shuttles

For getting between AlUla's main visitor areas without driving, the hop-on, hop-off shuttles are the easiest option. Three services operate from and return to Winter Park, which acts as the central hub connecting the destination's principal areas. This is a convenient, low-stress way to move around if you don't want to rent a car.

Visiting Hegra

Hegra, the Kingdom's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, cannot be visited independently — you need an organized experience, and transport is built into the options:

  • Hegra coach tour: from SAR 95 with transport to Hegra included. Tours typically last around two hours and require advance booking through the official AlUla visitor-booking platform.
  • Hegra hop-on, hop-off tour: from SAR 150
  • Private Hegra 4×4 tour: from approximately SAR 1,000 for up to seven people — a good choice for families or small groups travelling together.

Booking ahead is strongly recommended, as popular slots fill up quickly.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are available but limited, so don't count on flagging one down instantly. As a rough guide, short journeys within AlUla commonly cost around SAR 15–30, while longer trips commonly run about SAR 15–80. These are not fixed official tariffs, so agree on a fare before setting off.

Ride-hailing apps work in AlUla, but coverage is more limited than in Riyadh or Jeddah, and waits can exceed 30 minutes during busy periods. Plan extra time if you rely on them.

Airport transfers

Taxis and hotel transfers operate from AlUla International Airport. Reported airport-to-hotel fares are approximately SAR 80–150 depending on your destination. If your hotel offers a transfer, arranging it in advance is often the smoothest arrival option.

Renting a car

Rental cars are available at the airport and are generally the most flexible way to explore. Because AlUla's sites — Old Town, Hegra, Ashar Valley and others — are dispersed across the landscape, having your own vehicle lets you move at your own pace and reach places that shuttles don't serve as frequently.

Getting to AlUla from Madinah

If you're travelling overland, private transfers from Madinah are a common choice. Reported prices start at approximately SAR 700 SAR 1,100 for a minivan, and SAR 1,560 for a large luxury SUV. These are private-operator prices rather than government-set fares, so confirm the rate and inclusions when booking.

Our quick recommendation

If you want freedom to explore, rent a car. If you'd rather not drive, combine the hop-on, hop-off shuttles with an organized Hegra tour, and keep a ride-hailing app as backup. Whichever you choose, download the AlUla App first and book Hegra experiences in advance. Prices and schedules can change, so always confirm current details through the official AlUla channels before you travel.
