If you live in Saudi Arabia, Absher is the single most important government platform you will ever use. It is your gateway to most Ministry of Interior services—from checking your Iqama status to renewing residency, managing dependents, and confirming you have no outstanding traffic violations. The good news: the Absher account itself is completely free. You only pay for the individual services you request, and those payments go through the official SADAD billing system. This guide walks you through how to set up, secure, and get the most out of Absher as a resident.
Getting started: registration and access
Absher is available two ways, both linked to the same account:
- The official web portal, which has separate sections for Individuals and Business.
- The official mobile apps for iOS and Android.
To register as a new user, you verify your mobile number, set your security questions, and activate the account. Activation can be completed through online banking, self-service kiosks, or in person at authorized Passports (Jawazat), Civil Affairs, or police service centers. Once active, your account works seamlessly across the website and the app.
Logging in securely
You log in using your username or Iqama number and password, followed by a one-time code sent by SMS. Increasingly, login is routed through نفاذ, the unified national single sign-on that lets you access many government services with one trusted identity. A few security habits worth keeping:
- Never share your one-time code with anyone—no official body will ask for it.
- Keep your registered mobile number up to date, since it receives your verification codes.
- Choose security questions you will actually remember.
Your digital Iqama
One of Absher's most useful features is the digital Iqama. It is accepted at hotels, traffic stops, hospital admissions, and most government counters, which means carrying the physical card is no longer mandatory in these situations. To review your residency details, go to your services menu and look under Passports → Query Iqama (or the similar option). There you can confirm your Iqama status, your registered employer, your dependents, and your expiry date—useful to check before travel or any official transaction.
Renewing your Iqama
Residency renewal for most company employees carries a government fee of typically SAR 650 per year, with certain worker categories in the SAR 600–650 band. Dependent levies and other labor levies are additional. Before you can renew, make sure the following are in order:
- The government fee and any applicable levies are paid through SADAD.
- Your work permit is valid in the labor system (for private-sector contracts this is handled via قوى).
- You hold valid medical insurance.
- You have no unpaid traffic violations.
To submit the request, go to Services → Passports → Renew Resident Identity, choose your renewal period (usually one year or more), and confirm after payment. Note that from January 2025, an Absher processing service fee of SAR 51.75 (including VAT) commonly appears as a separate, non-refundable line in the SADAD bill on many Iqama-related transactions.
Managing dependents and family
Absher also lets you manage the residency of your sponsored family members. Issuing or renewing a dependent Iqama typically uses the same base residency fee band—around SAR 650 per year—plus the monthly dependent levy, which is commonly around SAR 400 per month per sponsored family member and is collected through separate payments. Because these amounts can change and vary by category, always confirm the exact figures shown in your own SADAD bill before paying.
Tips to avoid common problems
- Start renewals well before the expiry date to leave room for clearing any blocks (such as an unpaid fine or a lapsed work permit).
- Settle traffic violations first—an outstanding fine can stop a renewal from going through.
- Keep your medical insurance active and correctly linked to your record.
- Save or screenshot your SADAD payment confirmation until the transaction is fully processed.
Fees, levies, and menu labels can be updated over time. For the latest figures and the exact steps for your situation, always confirm on the official Absher portal or app before completing any payment.
