Sponsoring Family in Saudi Arabia: Dependent Iqama Guide

Bringing your spouse and children to live with you in Saudi Arabia is one of the most important steps for many residents, and it centers on a single document: the dependent iqama. This residency card links your family members to you as their sponsor and lets them live, study, and access services legally. The good news is that the process has become largely electronic — most issuance and renewal steps can now be completed from home through Absher without visiting an office. This guide walks you through eligibility, the exact online steps, family coverage rules, and how to stay compliant.

What is a dependent iqama?

A dependent iqama is the residency permit issued to a family member who is registered under a resident sponsor (the household head). Instead of holding an independent work-based residency, dependents are tied to the sponsor's record. This applies to a spouse and legal minor children who have already entered the Kingdom on the appropriate family visa and been added to the sponsor's family file.

Who is eligible

Before starting, make sure the core conditions are met, otherwise the electronic service will not complete:

  • The sponsor's own iqama must be valid.
  • The dependent must be registered under the sponsor in the family record.
  • The dependent must be physically inside Saudi Arabia at the time of issuance.
  • Passport, medical, insurance, and fee records must all be valid in the relevant systems.

An important point for families with older children: a household-head iqama covers the spouse and legal minor children only. A son or daughter over the age of 18 must hold their own passport and obtain a separate visa after paying the applicable fee — they are no longer automatically covered as minors.

How to issue a dependent iqama through Absher

Issuance is handled through Absher Individuals for any family member already registered in your family record and present inside the Kingdom. The service is designed to be completed electronically end-to-end.

  • Log in to your Absher Individuals account.
  • Open the family members / resident services section.
  • Select the dependent and choose the issuance service.
  • Choose the iqama period — the system lets you select a period starting at 3 months, or in multiples of 3 months.
  • Pay the applicable government fees through Saudi electronic banking or a government-payment channel before finalizing.
  • Submit and keep the electronic confirmation.

The option to choose a period beginning at 3 months (rather than only annual terms) is a recent update that gives families more flexibility in managing costs and timing.

Renewing a dependent iqama

Renewal follows a similar path. In Absher, go to Family Members Services → Resident Services → Resident ID renewal. Pay the required fees first, then submit the renewal request. Because the process is tied to fee payment, always settle any outstanding government charges before you begin so the transaction can go through smoothly.

To avoid last-minute problems, check each dependent's iqama expiry date well ahead of time using the electronic validity inquiry in Absher, which shows the resident ID's current status and expiry.

A note on fees

Fees for dependent iqama issuance and renewal, along with the monthly dependent levy, are set by the government and paid electronically before the transaction is completed. Because these amounts can be updated, we do not quote specific figures here. Always confirm the current SAR amounts directly through Absher or the official government-payment screen at the time of your transaction, so your budget reflects the latest rates.

Avoiding penalties and late renewal

Letting an iqama lapse can create real complications. Failing to submit a renewal before the expiry date can result in penalties, and the amount depends on the specific violation and the sponsor's category. To stay compliant:

  • Set reminders a month or more before each dependent's expiry date.
  • Keep passports and insurance valid, since expired records block the renewal.
  • Renew online early rather than waiting until the final days.

Which platform to use

For families, Absher Individuals is your main tool — it handles iqama issuance, renewal, expiry inquiries, and family-record services. Muqeem is primarily used by establishments for resident and passport transactions, so as an individual sponsor managing your household, your day-to-day platform will be Absher. Keeping your Absher account active and your contact details up to date ensures you receive alerts and can act quickly when a renewal is due.
