Jeddah Port Customs Foil 58.6kg Meth Smuggling Bid

Customs officers at Jeddah Islamic Port foiled an attempt to smuggle 58.6 kilograms of methamphetamine, known as shabu, into Saudi Arabia after finding the drugs concealed inside a shipment of men's shoes.

The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority said the narcotics were uncovered during routine customs procedures, aided by advanced security screening technologies and K9 sniffer-dog units. The drugs had been hidden in cavities built into the imported shoes to avoid detection.

Following the seizure, the Authority coordinated with the General Directorate of Narcotics Control to trace the parties behind the consignment. As a result, three individuals inside the Kingdom, identified as the intended recipients of the shipment, were arrested.

Why it matters

Jeddah Islamic Port is one of the country's main maritime entry points and a key gateway for imported goods. Cases like this show how screening technology and specialized detection teams are used at official border points to intercept illegal shipments before they reach the local market.

The matter is being handled as a criminal narcotics smuggling offense, with penalties determined under Saudi anti-drug and anti-smuggling laws rather than standard customs procedures. Authorities continue to urge the public to report any information related to drug smuggling or trafficking to the relevant security agencies.
