Makkah Municipality is rolling out a series of urban projects to study, establish, and develop pedestrian roads that link the city's neighborhoods with the Grand Mosque and the holy sites, part of an official effort to strengthen urban connectivity and enhance the city's identity for residents and visitors alike.
The works include new public squares and pedestrian walkways funded from the public budget. As municipal infrastructure, these open spaces function as public facilities, and no individual user fees or ticket prices are currently specified for using the new squares or walkways.
A program of public parks and squares in Makkah has been approved with allocations of around SAR 200 million for gardens and open urban spaces, supporting the creation of pedestrian-friendly areas across the city.
Larger urban regeneration
The Masar Urban Development and related projects in central Makkah include upgraded pedestrian corridors and public spaces along King Abdulaziz Road, forming a continuous urban spine between the western entrance of the city and the Grand Mosque. Separately, Masar Gardens (Masar 2) is a new destination in western Makkah, within the Western and Southern Al-Hindawiyah neighborhoods, covering about 1.2 million square meters and planned to include gardens, walkways, and service facilities. These are large-scale regeneration projects rather than individually priced venues.
For information, feedback, or municipal approvals related to public squares, parks, or pedestrian walkways in Makkah, the official channels are the Balady platform for municipal e-services, the municipal communications call center on 940, and Balady's short number 199040. Enhanced walkability and shaded gathering spaces are expected to make daily movement easier for the community and improve the experience for pilgrims and visitors.
