New Road Lanes Open in Makkah to Ease Traffic

New road lanes have opened in Makkah to ease traffic congestion and improve access for residents, visitors, and pilgrims. The lanes entered service on September 26, 2026, and are part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and road safety across the holy city.

On the Third Ring Road, an additional 1.5 km of new lanes is now open running from Prince Metab Intersection to Masjid al-Haram Intersection, passing through Prince Sultan Intersection. On Prince Saud Al Faisal Road, the remaining section has been opened for traffic from the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Axis to Abdulqadir Koshak Street, via Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz Intersection.

travel times on the affected routes have been reduced by more than 90%, offering a significant improvement for daily commuters and for those heading toward Masjid al-Haram.

What it means for the community

Using the new lanes is free of charge. There is no road-use fee (SAR 0) and no application is required. The road access is permanent, though it remains subject to normal traffic controls, construction work, or temporary closures when needed.

Traffic updates and management for the city are handled through the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites and the relevant Saudi traffic authorities. Motorists are advised to follow official signage and directions when using the newly opened sections.
