Mismatched Vehicle License: Fine Up to SAR 2,000

Drivers in Saudi Arabia are being reminded that using a driver's license that does not match the size of the vehicle or its type of use is a recorded traffic violation, carrying a fine ranging from SAR 1,000 to SAR 2,000. Public messaging has highlighted the upper limit of SAR 2,000 to underline the seriousness of the offence.

The violation appears in the national traffic schedule as "driving a vehicle with a driver's license that does not match the size of the vehicle or type of use." Updated tables for 2026 show no announced change to this SAR 1,000–2,000 band.

The same schedule lists several related plate and license offences. Driving without a front plate, or with unclear or damaged plates, carries SAR 1,000 to SAR 2,000. Driving without a rear plate or without plates at all, or hiding plates, ranges from SAR 3,000 to SAR 6,000. Using fake plates or plates that do not belong to the vehicle is the most severe, at SAR 5,000 to SAR 10,000, and may involve vehicle impoundment and referral to the Public Prosecution.

How to check and settle

Traffic violations are issued and viewable electronically through national e-services platforms, where drivers can view violation details, pay fines via bank channels or e-payment, and submit objections to certain violations within the allowed period.

The objection window is generally limited to 30 days from the recording of the violation. Once that period expires, the fine must be settled by payment. For aggravated plate cases involving fraud, additional procedures may apply, including impoundment until the issue is corrected and possible legal referral.

Motorists are advised to confirm that their license category matches the vehicle they intend to drive to avoid unnecessary fines and complications.
