More than 4,400 agricultural greenhouses are currently operating across Najran Region, producing vegetables led by tomatoes and cucumbers, Together they generate over 37,000 tons of tomatoes and cucumbers each year, a figure that remains the most recent officially reported volume for the region.
Beyond its two flagship crops, Najran's protected agriculture sector also yields bell peppers, zucchini, eggplant, okra, strawberries, figs, and a range of leafy vegetables, giving the region a diverse output that reaches local markets throughout the year.
Official statistics covering 2023–2024 show that the number of greenhouses and the total cultivated greenhouse area in Najran both rose over the period, reflecting continued investment and expansion in protected farming. Nationally, greenhouse vegetable production reached about 797,000 tons in 2024, including roughly 329,000 tons of tomatoes and more than 232,000 tons of cucumbers, placing Najran as a small but specialized contributor to the Kingdom's overall greenhouse output.
Why it matters
Greenhouse cultivation is viewed in national policy as a key pillar of food security, agricultural sustainability, and local economic support, with tomatoes and cucumbers identified as strategic crops. For residents in Najran and neighbouring regions, expanding protected agriculture means steadier local supply, more agricultural jobs, and reduced reliance on produce brought in from elsewhere.
Protected farming allows crops to grow year-round under controlled conditions, using less water and land than open-field cultivation. As Najran continues to add greenhouses and expand cultivated area, the region strengthens its role in supplying fresh vegetables to households and markets across the south of the Kingdom.
