Saudi Arabia has introduced a new electronic workflow for trading, clearing, and settling Saudi-riyal sukuk and bonds, giving domestic investors the ability to request and compare quotes electronically from eligible dealers. The first transaction using the workflow was completed between GIB Capital and Saudi Awwal Bank.
Under the new setup, trading, confirmation, matching, and execution all take place electronically on the local debt-market infrastructure. Once a trade is executed, it is sent to Muqassa for clearing and post-trade processing, and Muqassa in turn passes settlement instructions to Edaa, the country's securities depository.
The workflow follows a standard T+2 settlement cycle, meaning trades settle two business days after execution. It is available through an approved alternative trading system for local sukuk and SAR-denominated debt instruments, operating under the supervision of the Capital Market Authority.
Why it matters
For residents and investors in the Kingdom, the move signals a more efficient and transparent way to access the local fixed-income market. Being able to request and compare quotes electronically from multiple dealers can help improve price discovery, while automated clearing and settlement through established market institutions adds a layer of standardization to post-trade handling.
No publicly confirmed investor fees, transaction prices, subscription minimums, or workflow-specific charges have been identified. The process is a securities-trading service and does not involve any residency, visa, or government-app requirement.
