Madinah rewards visitors who slow down. A weekend here is best built around the rhythm of prayer at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, with unhurried walks through old markets, quiet ziyarat to historic mosques, and a museum or two to deepen the experience. This two-day plan keeps you close to Al-Haram so you can park once and explore mostly on foot.
Where to Stay for a Park-and-Walk Weekend
Staying within walking distance of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is the single best decision you can make. Two options at different budgets:
- Madinah Hilton on King Fahd Road (Bada'ah) is a 2–5 minute walk to the mosque. Standard rooms in busy season typically run around SAR 700–1,200
- Zaha Taiba Hotel on Abi Zur Al Ghafari is roughly a 10–15 minute walk, with typical rates around SAR 250–500
Rates shift with season and occupancy, so confirm current prices before you book.
Day 1 — Spiritual Focus Near Al-Haram
Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is open 24/7, and entry is free for Muslims. Anchor your day around the five prayers here — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha — and let everything else fit in between.
To visit the Rawdah, you'll need a free permit through the Nusuk app. Each person may book once every 365 days, and time inside is usually 10–15 minutes. Men enter via Gate 37 and women via Gate 25. Children under 5 aren't permitted inside; those aged 5 and above need their own permit.
Between prayers, explore the traditional markets around the mosque, including the Souq al-Manakha / Old Bazaar area. Look for dates, prayer beads, abayas, and perfumes — most souvenirs fall between SAR 10 and 100+ depending on the item.
For dinner, a rooftop meal with a view of the mosque is a memorable close to the day. Rooftop restaurants in the central Haram area, such as The Roof, typically serve mains at SAR 60–120 with drinks around SAR 15–30.
Day 2 — Ziyarat and History
Start early to beat the heat and cover the key historic sites:
- Quba Mosque in the Quba district — the first mosque in Islamic history. Open daily, no entry fee.
- Masjid al-Qiblatayn in north-west Madinah — the site of the change of qiblah. Open daily, no entry fee.
- Mount Uhud and the martyrs' cemetery north of the city — an open area with no entry fee, best visited in the early morning.
Museums Worth Your Time
Two museums add valuable context to what you've seen:
- Dar Al Madinah Museum presents historical models and artefacts tracing the city's evolution. Entry is typically around SAR 50–80 and hours commonly run around 09:00–22:00 with an afternoon break — verify locally, as seasons affect timings.
- The International Exhibition & Museum of the Prophet's Biography and Islamic Civilization, near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, offers an interactive, immersive journey through the Seerah.
Practical Tips
- Book your Rawdah permit on Nusuk well before you arrive — slots fill quickly.
- Carry a small bag for shoes and modest, comfortable clothing suitable for the mosque and heat.
- Plan outdoor ziyarat for the cool early morning.
- Always confirm museum hours and hotel rates directly before your trip.
With prayers at its heart, a couple of historic mosques, and a thoughtful museum visit, a weekend in Madinah is both restful and rich.
