Riyadh has transformed into one of the region's most exciting weekend destinations, blending centuries-old heritage with striking modern skylines, buzzing dining precincts, and easy access to raw desert landscapes. With the metro now fully running, getting around is simpler than ever. Here is Saudi Living's practical plan for making the most of two or three days in the capital, whether you live here or are visiting for the first time.
Getting Around: The Metro
Since January 2025, all six metro lines have been fully operational, making it the fastest, most affordable way to move across the city. A two-hour pass costs about SAR 4, or you can simply tap a contactless bank card at the gates. The metro conveniently connects to Diriyah, Kingdom Centre, the National Museum, and much of central Riyadh, so you can skip the traffic and parking hassle for most attractions.
Friday Evening: Diriyah and Bujairi Terrace
Start your weekend at Diriyah, the birthplace of the Saudi state. From 1 May to 30 September 2026, access to At-Turaif is free with an advance slot booked through the Ministry of Culture online platform. Outside that window, a Diriyah Pass costs around SAR 50 for evening entry and is typically redeemable as dining credit at Bujairi Terrace; children under 12 enter free.
Adjacent Bujairi Terrace is a beautiful dining precinct open roughly from 09:00 to 03:00, with sit-down restaurants averaging SAR 150–300 A few tips:
- Parking runs about SAR 10
- Valet is around SAR 195, but is often waived with a restaurant spend of about SAR 150 or more.
- Evenings are lively — book a table ahead on weekends.
Saturday Morning: Heritage in Central Riyadh
Dedicate your morning to the city's historic core. Al Masmak Fortress in the Al Dirah area offers free museum entry and takes about 1–2 hours to explore. Nearby, browse Souk Al-Zal, a traditional market that is free to wander and comes alive in the late afternoon and evening. If you have more time, the National Museum of Saudi Arabia in Murabba is ticketed and deserves 3–4 hours to appreciate fully.
Saturday Afternoon: Skyline Views
For the best panorama of Riyadh, head to the Kingdom Centre Sky Bridge in Al Olaya. The observation deck ticket is about SAR 69 for adults and SAR 23 for children, with a typical visit lasting around an hour. Access is usually available during mall trading hours into the late evening — check the current times posted on-site, and aim for sunset for the most dramatic views.
Nature and Fresh Air
Balance the city buzz with the outdoors. Wadi Hanifah stretches along western Riyadh, including near Diriyah, and its parks and walking paths are free — best enjoyed early morning or late afternoon. Families may enjoy Riyadh Zoo in Malaz, where zone entry is free during Riyadh Season with advance booking required; plan for 2–3 hours.
Sunday Adventure: Edge of the World
If you have a full weekend, cap it with a trip to Edge of the World, the dramatic cliff formations northwest of Riyadh. The site is reachable only by 4×4, and the site itself is not ticketed — your cost is transport and guiding. Half-day guided tours typically run SAR 400–800 with departures around 07:00. Bring water, sturdy shoes, and sun protection.
Final Tips
- Weekends are busiest at Diriyah and Riyadh Season zones — book slots early.
- Always confirm current hours, fares, and booking requirements on the relevant official Saudi platform before you go.
- Mix indoor and outdoor plans to suit the season and the heat.
