Public Investment Fund has reaffirmed that sports remain a priority sector within its investment strategy, placing football at the heart of its global growth as it continues to expand a portfolio built up over the past several years.
The fund confirmed it is an official tournament supporter of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America, under a commercial sponsorship partnership with FIFA. Its football holdings currently include an 80% stake in Newcastle United FC in England, acquired in 2021, and majority ownership (75%) of Saudi Pro League clubs Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli since June 2023.
Additional partnerships cover the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and Concacaf competitions, including the Concacaf Champions Cup and the 2025 Gold Cup. In total, disclosed football-related investment since 2021 exceeds USD 15 billion, spanning club investments, player acquisitions, stadium upgrades, league operations and infrastructure.
Why it matters
The fund describes sports as a strategic asset class within its broader Tourism, Travel and Entertainment ecosystem under رؤية السعودية 2030 and its 2026–2030 strategy. Its overall sports footprint now includes at least 346 active sponsorships across football, combat sports, e-sports, tennis and motorsport. The new strategy emphasises value realisation and more disciplined spending, including a decision to end funding for LIV Golf after 2026 while maintaining and expanding football investments.
For residents and fans, participation continues through normal club ticketing and broadcasting channels. There are no dedicated government portals, no SAR-denominated public fees, and no citizen procedures tied to these investments — official updates are shared through the fund's website and its verified social media accounts.
