Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) will continue investing in global sports in 2026, but it is tightening its approach toward more disciplined, return-focused allocations,
As part of this recalibration, PIF confirmed that its funding for LIV Golf will end after the 2026 season. The move signals a shift in how the fund prioritizes and evaluates its sports commitments going forward.
Despite the change, PIF remains connected to a broad portfolio of sports assets and partnerships. These include SURJ Sports Investment, motorsports interests, Newcastle United, ties with the ATP and WTA tennis tours, and an official supporter role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A lower strategic priority
Notably, sports was not included among PIF’s six priority ecosystems in its 2026–2030 strategy reset. This suggests a lower strategic weighting for the sector compared with previous years, even as the fund maintains active positions internationally.
For residents and sports fans in the Kingdom, the update points to a more selective phase of investment. Rather than broad expansion, PIF appears focused on holdings that can deliver clearer financial returns, while continuing to support high-profile global events and franchises that keep Saudi Arabia visible on the world sports stage.
