Rain Alerts Hit Southern Regions as Heat Lingers

Weather alerts are active across several regions of Saudi Arabia this September as authorities warn of thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and flash floods in the south and highlands, while major cities continue to record late-summer heat. There is no officially recognized "meteorological fall" in the Kingdom, and conditions vary sharply between regions.

Repeated thunderstorm and heavy-rain warnings have been issued for Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and the highlands of Makkah, with variable rainfall intensities expected to continue through at least Friday, 20–22 September. Affected areas in Jazan include Sabya, Abu Arish, Fayfa, Samtah, Baysh, Jazan city and the Farasan Islands. In Asir, alerts cover Abha, Khamis Mushait, Ahad Rafidah, Al-Namas, Tanomah, Bisha, Rijal Almaa and others.

Al-Baha areas under watch include Al-Baha city, Baljurashi, Al-Mandaq and Al-Aqiq. In the Makkah region, Taif, Al-Jumum, Khulais, Al-Qunfudhah and Al-Lith are among those flagged. Additional warnings extend to parts of Madinah — including the city, Al-Ula and Khaybar — and to Najran, covering Najran city, Sharurah and nearby districts.

Despite the rain risk in these zones, average September rainfall in central and western lowlands remains near zero. Riyadh and Jeddah typically see no rainy days this month, though localized convective storms can appear outside normal patterns.

Temperatures across major cities stay firmly in summer ranges: Riyadh highs of about 40–43°C, Jeddah and Makkah around 37–41°C, and Madinah reaching close to 44°C. Residents in the affected southern and highland regions are advised to stay clear of valleys and low-lying areas during rainfall and to follow official guidance, while those in the major cities should continue taking precautions against the ongoing heat.
