Riyadh gas cylinder blast kills three in apartment fire

A fire triggered by the sudden explosion of a domestic gas cylinder inside a residential apartment building in Riyadh killed three people on 22 August 2026, Additional residents were evacuated from the building as emergency crews responded to the scene.

Civil Defense and emergency services worked to control the blaze and secure the building. No official government bulletin has yet specified the exact number of injuries. Residents across the Kingdom can reach emergency services on the unified number 911 in Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, and the Eastern Province, and 998 in other regions.

What to do in a gas emergency

Authorities advise residents who suspect a gas leak to evacuate immediately, close the gas valve if it is safe to do so, ventilate the area, and avoid operating any electrical switches, which can ignite accumulated gas. Assistance should be requested right away through the emergency numbers.

The incident has prompted renewed safety warnings for 2026. Households are urged to inspect gas cylinders and valves regularly for rust, deformation, or damage, ensure installations comply with Saudi standards and Civil Defense instructions, and install gas leak detection devices at home. Cylinders should be kept away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and gas and electrical appliances should be switched off when leaving home for extended periods.

Under current safety rules, LPG tanks must be installed outside buildings, comply with Saudi standards, and include safety valves such as a quick shut-off valve near appliances. Many building codes limit the number of cylinders permitted in one location and require secure, louvered steel enclosures with minimum clearance distances from openings, boundaries, and access routes. The rules matter for the thousands of families and small businesses across Riyadh and other cities that rely on gas cylinders daily.
