Riyadh POS Spending Drops 6.7% in Latest Week

Point-of-sale (POS) spending in Riyadh fell to SR4.88 billion in the latest weekly reading, a decline of 6.7% compared with the previous week,

The number of POS transactions in the capital also dropped to 80.36 million, down 5.1% week-on-week. The pullback in Riyadh mirrored a wider national trend, with total POS value across the Kingdom easing to SR14.6 billion and transactions falling to 253.42 million.

The dip in weekly payment volumes has prompted parts of the retail and hospitality sectors in Riyadh to review their promotions and pricing as they respond to shifting consumer activity. Adjusting offers and price points is a common way for outlets to encourage spending during slower stretches.

Why it matters

Weekly POS data offers a near real-time snapshot of consumer behaviour in the capital, making it a useful gauge for shoppers, small businesses and restaurateurs alike. A softer week can translate into more competitive deals for residents, while businesses watch the numbers to plan stock, staffing and marketing.

For households in Riyadh, the current environment may bring added value through targeted promotions in the weeks ahead. Saudi Living will continue to track how spending trends evolve and what they mean for everyday budgets across the city.
