Riyadh sits in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula and has a classic hot desert climate: long, intensely hot and dry summers, and short, mild winters. Knowing how the temperatures shift through the year makes a big difference to how much you enjoy the city — whether you're planning a move, a holiday, or simply deciding when to schedule outdoor plans. This guide breaks down Riyadh's weather month by month and points you to the best windows for a comfortable visit.
Riyadh's climate at a glance
The city has two clear seasons that matter most: a punishing summer and a pleasant winter. Rainfall is low overall — roughly 100 to 120 mm across the whole year — and it is far from evenly spread. Most rain falls between November and April, while June to September stays almost completely dry.
- Summer (May–September): extremely hot, average highs of 40–45 °C, with many days climbing above 45 °C and virtually no rain.
- Winter (December–February): mild and dry, daytime highs around 20–23 °C and cool nights that often dip below 10 °C.
Temperatures month by month
Daytime highs give the clearest picture of what to expect. January is the coolest month at around 20 °C, warming steadily through spring — 28 °C in March, then into the low 30s by April. From May onward the heat builds sharply, peaking in July and August at 43–45 °C, before easing back to a comfortable 27–28 °C in November and around 21–22 °C in December.
Nights are noticeably cooler year-round thanks to the dry desert air. Winter lows sit between 7 and 10 °C, and in some years colder nights can approach freezing, so bring a jacket if you're visiting between December and February.
Rain and dust
Riyadh's small rainfall total is concentrated in the cooler half of the year, with March and April usually the wettest months at around 20–27 mm each. Don't expect prolonged rain, though — showers tend to be brief.
The bigger weather factor in late winter and spring is dust. Dusty winds and dust storms are more frequent around March and April, which can reduce visibility and irritate allergies. If you're sensitive to dust, keep this in mind when planning outdoor activities during those months.
The best time to visit
For comfortable weather, aim for late October to March, when daytime highs generally sit between 20 and 30 °C and evenings are cool and easy. Within that window, November to February offers the most pleasant outdoor conditions — ideal for walking, dining outside, and attending events.
This is also when Riyadh Season and most major outdoor entertainment run, roughly October to March. That means far more to do, but also bigger crowds and higher demand for hotels.
Balancing crowds and prices
If you want mild weather without the peak-season rush, consider the shoulder periods:
- Late October to early November — pleasant temperatures as the summer heat breaks.
- Late February to March — still comfortable, with lighter crowds than mid-winter (though keep an eye on the dust).
These windows usually offer slightly lower accommodation prices than the busiest mid-winter weeks.
Visiting in summer
If your trip falls in the summer months, Riyadh is still very much visitable — just plan around the heat. The city is full of large air-conditioned malls, museums, and indoor attractions, so shopping and indoor entertainment work well year-round. Save outdoor plans for early morning or after sunset, stay hydrated, and take midday breaks indoors.
