Saudi Arabia is expanding community sports and public-health programs through a new partnership between the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing and the Ministry of Sports, aimed at developing public spaces and encouraging physical activity across the Kingdom.
The cooperation has already delivered measurable results. It produced 39 contracts for developing public parks, 392 temporary contracts to run sports activities inside parks, and 41 contracts for hosting sports events on municipal land. More than 100 public parks have been modernized through the Sports Neighborhoods Initiative, which upgrades neighborhood spaces so residents can exercise closer to home.
The partnership also opens the door for private companies to develop and operate sports facilities within public parks, a step that supports local business activity while improving everyday access to recreation.
Why it matters
Community sports — defined as regular or occasional non-professional physical activity carried out for health and social benefit — sit at the heart of the effort. These initiatives are led by the Saudi Sports for All Federation under the Ministry of Sports and the Quality of Life Program.
Public interest is clear. The "Team Saudi Challenge" fitness campaign drew more than 30,000 participants and recorded over 51 million calories burned. Across the Kingdom, community events and programs organized by the federation have been hosted at 3,285 venues, giving residents and expats in cities such as الرياض and جدة more ways to stay active.
For families and newcomers, the expansion means better-equipped neighborhood parks and a steady calendar of accessible, non-professional sports activities designed to build healthier daily habits.
