Saudi POS Spending Steady at SR15.8bn in Early Sept

Consumer spending in Saudi Arabia through point-of-sale (POS) terminals held broadly steady at about SR15.8 billion during the week ending 5 September 2026, roughly unchanged from the previous week,

The number of POS transactions rose to about 267.8 million during the week, up from around 255.4 million a week earlier. The four-week moving average of transaction value stood at approximately SR15 billion, indicating a stable spending trend heading into September.

Spending patterns showed food and beverages accounting for about SR2.69 billion, or roughly 17% of total POS spending. Restaurants and cafes drew around SR1.81 billion, making up about 11.4% of the total, underlining the continued weight of dining and daily essentials in household budgets.

Riyadh leads the map

Riyadh recorded the largest share of consumer spending, with approximately SR5.53 billion, or about 34.9% of the national total for the week. This confirms the capital's role as the Kingdom's main hub for retail and service activity.

Over recent weeks in late August and early September 2026, POS spending has fluctuated between roughly SR14.6 billion and SR16.3 billion, with transaction counts ranging from about 244 million to 267 million. The latest reading sits comfortably within that band.

For residents and expats, the figures offer a useful snapshot of everyday spending across shops, restaurants and services. The data covers card and digital payments made at point-of-sale terminals only, and does not include cash payments or online transfers.
