Saudi Premium Residency Explained: Tracks & Fees

Saudi Premium Residency is one of the most significant shifts in how the Kingdom welcomes talent, investors, and long-term residents. Instead of being tied to a single employer through a standard work sponsorship, Premium Residency holders enjoy a more independent status with wider rights to live, work, invest, and own property. At Saudi Living we get asked about it constantly, so here is a practical, up-to-date breakdown of the tracks, fees, and how the process actually works.

What is Premium Residency?

Premium Residency is a national program run through the official Saudi Premium Residency Center, an online platform integrated with the National Government Portal. It gives eligible expats a residency status that does not depend on a traditional employer sponsor. Depending on the track, holders may be able to work in the private sector, run a business, own real estate, sponsor family members, and move in and out of the Kingdom more freely.

The two general tracks

The program's foundation is two straightforward options:

  • Unlimited (Permanent) Premium Residency: a one-time government fee of SAR 800,000. It is valid for life, with no renewal required.
  • Limited-Duration (Annual Renewable) Premium Residency: a government fee of SAR 100,000 per year. Each grant is valid for one year and is renewed by paying the annual fee again.

These two tracks suit people who want maximum flexibility and independence and can meet the higher fee levels.

Category-based Premium Residency options

Between 2024 and 2026 the program expanded significantly with lower-cost, category-based products. These typically carry a government fee of around SAR 4,000 per year or per grant and are aimed at specific profiles:

  • Special Talent Residency: fee about SAR 4,000, usually valid up to 5 years and renewable, for professionals with recognized expertise in priority sectors.
  • Gifted Residency: fee about SAR 4,000, valid up to 5 years and renewable, for those with distinguished cultural, artistic, or sporting talent.
  • Investor / Business Investor Residency: fee SAR 4,000, with investment thresholds (capital of roughly SAR 7 million and job-creation requirements). Validity is conditional on maintaining the qualifying investment and is sometimes described as conditional permanent.
  • Entrepreneur Residency (standard and premium variants): fee SAR 4,000, valid up to 5 years, linked to startup funding and business activity.
  • Real Estate Owner Residency: fee SAR 4,000, usually up to 5 years and renewable, conditional on owning mortgage-free residential property worth at least SAR 4,000,000 and keeping that ownership.

The extra costs to budget for

Beyond the main product fee, there are additional charges that apply across most categories:

  • An application processing fee of roughly SAR 640–2,400 (often quoted around USD 170 for the primary application), separate from the main fee.
  • Medical examination costs for each applicant, commonly around SAR 150–200
  • Dependent processing fees when adding a spouse, children, and in some cases parents — often estimated at around USD 1,000–3,000 equivalent

Because these figures can be updated, always confirm the current amounts on the official Premium Residency Center portal before applying.

Adding your family

One of the biggest advantages is the ability to include dependents on your file. A spouse and children can generally be added, and in certain cases parents as well, each with a nominal processing fee. This lets a family live under a single Premium Residency arrangement rather than separate employer-based sponsorships.

Validity and renewal at a glance

  • The permanent track needs no renewal — it is a lifetime status.
  • The annual track is valid one year at a time and renewed by paying the yearly fee.
  • Category-based residencies are usually valid up to 5 years and renewable, but many are conditional: you must keep meeting the qualifying criteria (such as maintaining an investment or property ownership).

How to apply

Applications are made digitally through the official Saudi Premium Residency Center platform. In broad terms you create an account, choose the track that fits your profile, upload supporting documents, complete the medical examination, and pay the applicable fees once approved. Requirements differ by category, so review the eligibility conditions carefully and verify every fee on the official portal. If you qualify, Premium Residency can transform how settled and independent your life in the Kingdom feels.
