Saudi VAT Registration and Filing: What Businesses Need

Businesses operating in Saudi Arabia are reminded of the Value Added Tax (VAT) registration and filing rules that continue to apply through 2025–2026. Companies must register for VAT once their annual taxable supplies reach the mandatory threshold, with the standard VAT rate remaining at 15%.

Registration becomes mandatory when annual taxable supplies reach SAR 375,000. Businesses with taxable supplies or taxable expenses of at least SAR 187,500 may register voluntarily. Applications are submitted electronically through the ZATCA portal. Non-resident businesses must first appoint a Saudi tax representative before they can register.

The online application requires the business name and identification details, address and email, commercial registration number, registration date, and the value of annual taxable supplies. Applicants should also prepare supporting documents, including the Commercial Registration, Memorandum of Association, the National ID of the authorised signatory, bank account details for refunds, customs registration for importers, and projected turnover figures.

Filing frequency

How often a business files its VAT returns depends on its turnover. Companies with annual turnover above SAR 40 million file monthly, while those at or below SAR 40 million file quarterly.

These requirements matter to the wide community of business owners, entrepreneurs, and expat professionals across the Kingdom. Staying compliant with registration thresholds and filing deadlines helps businesses avoid penalties and operate smoothly. The current guidance keeps the SAR 375,000 mandatory and SAR 187,500 voluntary thresholds unchanged, giving businesses clarity as they plan their operations.
