Security Alerts Lifted for Mecca, Jeddah, Taif

Saudi Civil Defense issued brief security alerts on 15 September 2026 for Mecca (Makkah), Jeddah and Taif through the National Early Warning Platform for Emergencies, following a series of missile and drone attacks. The alerts were short-lived and later lifted after Civil Defense confirmed that the immediate danger had passed and announced the end of the measures.

The warnings covered several western areas in addition to Mecca, including Jeddah Governorate, Taif Governorate, Abha, Jazan Province, AlUla Governorate and Yanbu. During the alert period, one drone was intercepted and destroyed by Saudi air defenses south of Mecca before it could enter prohibited airspace over the holy city.

What residents were advised to do

Civil Defense guidance for Mecca and Jeddah during and after the alerts asked the public to follow official safety instructions, avoid gatherings, and refrain from filming during incidents. Residents were reminded to use the national emergency number 911 in case of emergency.

The alerts were broadcast warnings only. They did not introduce any new fees, permits, or platform-based procedures specific to Mecca or Jeddah, and they were lifted without leaving any ongoing administrative requirements.

Separately, standard Hajj and Umrah access controls for Mecca remain in place through early-to-mid June 2026. From 18 April, anyone entering Mecca during the Hajj control period must hold a Hajj permit, a Mecca residency ID, or a valid Mecca work permit; others may be denied entry and face penalties. The last day for entry into Saudi Arabia on an Umrah visa was 3 April 2026, and Umrah visa holders must depart by 18 April 2026.

Saudi Living advises residents in the affected cities to rely only on official Civil Defense channels for updates and to keep the 911 emergency number on hand.
