Saudi traffic authorities have reiterated that driving a vehicle with a driver's license that does not match the vehicle's size or its type of use is a traffic violation, carrying a fine of between 1,000 and 2,000 Saudi Riyal. The clarification was issued in early September 2026.
The violation applies in two main situations. The first is when a driver holds a license category that is not appropriate for the class of vehicle being driven — for example, using a private car license to drive a heavy vehicle or a bus. The second is when the license type does not match the vehicle's registered use, such as driving a vehicle registered for commercial or public transport purposes while holding a private-use license.
The infraction is recorded under national traffic-violation schedules and is worded as "driving a vehicle with a driver's license that does not match the size of the vehicle or type of use," carrying the same 1,000–2,000 Saudi Riyal band on electronic capturing platforms. Authorities confirmed that no higher or lower band specific to this violation was introduced in the 2026 clarifications; the range remains unchanged.
Why it matters
The fine sits within the national traffic-violation framework that groups licensing-related infractions in the 1,000–2,000 Saudi Riyal range. Other licensing and plate-related violations, such as driving with unclear or damaged plates, fall within the same band, reflecting consistency for infractions of similar seriousness.
Drivers are advised to ensure their license category matches both the size and registered use of the vehicle they operate. Traffic violations in Saudi Arabia can typically be viewed and paid through national e-government platforms.
