Students May Lose School Bus Access Over Safety Rules

Education authorities have warned that students who commit safety violations while using school transport may be barred from school bus services for up to one full academic year. The move aims to protect students and keep bus rides safe and orderly for everyone.

The listed violations include not waiting in designated pickup and drop-off areas, boarding or disembarking in a disorderly way, not sitting in assigned seats, and failing to wear seat belts while the bus is moving. Ignoring the driver's instructions, extending heads, hands, or other body parts through windows or doors, bringing dangerous items on board, and damaging the bus, its facilities, or others' property are also counted as breaches.

Students are expected to follow clear safety steps. They must inform the driver immediately if the bus is being used improperly or if a designated stop has been missed, and make sure the bus has come to a complete stop before getting off. They should never cross the road in front of the bus; instead, they must wait until it has moved away and confirm the road is clear. In an emergency or accident, students should follow the driver's instructions, use emergency exits, and evacuate calmly and in an orderly manner.

How the service works

The School Transportation Service is an electronic service of the Ministry of Education that lets parents register male and female students for bus trips to and from schools. Registration is completed through the Ministry's online portal, with no need to visit its offices in person. The service is designed to simplify procedures and provide a safe, organized means of transport.

Under the Basic Regulations for Educational Transport Activity, school transport vehicles must carry an active GPS tracking device, an in-date fire extinguisher, and a fully stocked first aid kit, and must provide working seat belts for all passenger seats. For families, the message is simple: following the rules keeps the daily ride safe and helps students avoid losing a valuable service.
