Suhail Star to Rise Late August, Signaling Cooler Days

The star Suhail (Canopus) is expected to return to Saudi skies in the coming weeks, a moment residents across the Kingdom have long treated as the traditional sign that the harshest days of summer are beginning to fade.

Over the Northern Borders Region, Suhail is forecast to rise on 26 August 2026 at about 5:51 a.m., roughly one minute before local sunrise at 5:52 a.m. Its visibility moves gradually from south to north each year: appearing around 7 August in the Jazan region, around 24 August across central Saudi Arabia including Riyadh and its surroundings, and around 8 September in the Kingdom’s northern regions. For the 2026 season, astronomical references adopt 24 August as the standard rising date for the central regions.

In the Aseer Region, the Suhail season for 2026 is reported to begin on 29 July and last 13 days. There, communities have long used the star as a marker for milder weather, expected rainfall, and preparation for agricultural and tourism activities.

What it means for daily life

Traditionally, the rise of Suhail signals the gradual decline of peak summer heat and the approach of cooler nights, rather than an immediate drop in daytime temperatures. Daytime hours typically stay warm during this period, while evenings begin to moderate. The Suhail period over the Arabian Peninsula is commonly described as spanning about 52 days, during which farmers and herders track subsequent seasonal phases such as the Wasm.

Suhail is a purely astronomical and seasonal event. There are no government fees, permits, validity periods, or online procedures tied to it, and no charges are attached to observing the star in 2026.
