Two Egyptian nationals were killed and 25 others injured when a bus carrying Umrah pilgrims overturned near Al-Jumum in Makkah Province on the evening of Saturday, 5 September 2026. The bus was travelling on the road from Medina to Mecca when a car collided with it, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The bus was carrying 47 Egyptian pilgrims. Of the 25 injured, seven remain in intensive care, while the injuries of the others were described as light to moderate. Those who were treated for lighter injuries have since been discharged from hospital and returned to their accommodation in Mecca.
Passengers who were not among the injured received first aid, were discharged, and were then accommodated at their designated hotels in Mecca.
A legal and consular team from Egypt has arrived in Jeddah to follow the Saudi investigative and judicial procedures related to the accident.
Why it matters
The road between Medina and Mecca is heavily used by pilgrims throughout the year, and incidents of this kind are a reminder of the importance of road safety for the millions who travel between the two holy cities. As of early September 2026, authorities have not announced any changes to Umrah visa fees, transport regulations, or e-platform procedures directly tied to this crash.
