Using Careem and Uber in Saudi Arabia: Full Guide

Ride-hailing apps have become one of the easiest ways to get around Saudi cities, whether you're a new arrival, a resident without a car, or a visitor exploring on foot. Both Uber and Careem operate legally across the Kingdom as licensed services regulated by the Transport General Authority, and for everyday rides you don't need to link any government platform — no Absher, مقيم, or توكلنا interaction is required just to book a car. This Saudi Living guide walks you through how the apps work, what rides actually cost, and how to plan airport and inter-city travel.

How the apps work in Saudi Arabia

Both apps function the same way you'd expect anywhere: download, register with your phone number, add a payment method (card or cash), set your pickup point, and confirm your destination. Fares are calculated automatically before you confirm, so you always see an estimate up front. Careem also offers cash payment in many Saudi cities, which is handy if you prefer not to use a card.

  • Both services are fully licensed for passenger transport within Saudi cities.
  • No official government portal login is needed for normal rider use.
  • You can choose between service tiers — for example UberX, or Careem GO and the cheaper GO Budget.

Understanding the pricing

Fares are built from a base fare plus a per-kilometre and per-minute charge, with a minimum fare that applies to very short trips. A small government ride-sharing fee is also added

For UberX, a current published example looks like this:

  • Base fare: SAR 3.25
  • Per kilometre: SAR 0.92
  • Per minute: SAR 0.21
  • Minimum fare: SAR 7.50
  • Government ride-sharing fee: about SAR 0.525 added per trip

Careem GO and GO Budget typically range from a base of about SAR 5–9, roughly SAR 1.0–2.0 and SAR 0.3–0.8 GO Budget usually comes in 15–25% cheaper than standard GO on the same route, making it a good value pick.

What city rides really cost

Actual prices depend on distance, time of day, and demand (surge pricing during busy periods). As a rule of thumb across major cities:

  • Short urban trips in الرياض, جدة, Makkah, or Tabuk: about SAR 15–40, sometimes up to SAR 50 in high demand.
  • 5–10 km trips in الرياض: commonly SAR 20–40, roughly SAR 2
  • A typical 10 km ride in الرياض: around SAR 20–30.
  • Central Makkah rides: usually SAR 15–40.
  • Tabuk city rides: generally SAR 15–50.

If you're on a budget, compare both apps before booking and pick the cheaper tier — prices for the same route can differ noticeably.

Airport runs: what to budget

Airport trips cost more because of distance and any airport surcharges. Use these benchmarks to plan:

  • مطار الملك خالد الدولي (RUH) → central الرياض (Olaya/City): usually SAR 50–90.
  • King Fahd International (DMM) → الدمام / Khobar: usually SAR 80–160 — often SAR 80–130 for الدمام and SAR 110–160 for Khobar.
  • مطار الملك عبدالعزيز الدولي (JED) → central جدة, كورنيش جدة, or البلد: typically SAR 40–100 depending on the area.
  • Jeddah airport (T1) → Makkah for Umrah: often SAR 180–280 off-peak, and SAR 250+ during surge periods.

Booking slightly ahead of peak arrival times and avoiding surge windows can save you money on these longer runs.

Inter-city travel and limits

An important point for planning: Uber and Careem are officially restricted to intra-city operation for normal app rides. They do not offer standard consumer inter-city trips such as الرياض–جدة or Makkah–Madinah. For those journeys, consider the قطار الحرمين high-speed railway between Makkah, جدة, and Madinah, domestic flights with الخطوط السعودية or طيران ناس, or licensed intercity coach and car services.

Tips for a smooth ride

  • Always check the fare estimate and the driver's plate and details before getting in.
  • Consider GO Budget or comparing both apps to save on routine trips.
  • Keep some cash handy if you prefer cash payment on Careem.
  • For airport pickups, follow the app's designated ride-hailing pickup zone signage.
  • Prices shown here are indicative — always confirm the live estimate in the app, as fares change with demand and regulation updates.
