Businesses operating in Saudi Arabia are reminded of the rules governing Value Added Tax (VAT), covering when to register, how often to file, and how to recover tax paid on business expenses. The current VAT rate stands at 15%.
Registration is mandatory for resident businesses whose taxable supplies reach or exceed SAR 375,000 over the past 12 months, or that expect to reach that figure in the coming 12 months. Businesses with taxable supplies between SAR 187,500 and SAR 375,000 may register voluntarily. Both thresholds remain unchanged in the materials issued for 2026.
Non-resident businesses that make taxable supplies inside the Kingdom must register for VAT regardless of their turnover. Registration is completed through the online VAT service. Companies that cross the mandatory threshold are required to register within the statutory deadline; this is expected to be completed promptly after the threshold is reached.
Filing and recovering input tax
Filing is done on a quarterly basis for businesses with annual sales below SAR 40 million. VAT-registered businesses can generally recover input VAT paid on taxable business expenses, which lowers the effective cost of purchases used for their operations.
This point is especially relevant for smaller companies weighing voluntary registration: registering before reaching the mandatory threshold allows a business to start recovering input tax earlier, which can improve cash flow for growing operations.
For residents and expat entrepreneurs running businesses in Riyadh, Jeddah, and beyond, understanding these thresholds and deadlines helps avoid penalties and keeps operations compliant. Owners near the voluntary threshold may find it worthwhile to weigh the benefits of early registration against the added filing responsibilities.
