Understanding local customs is one of the fastest ways to feel at home in Saudi Arabia and to build genuine, warm relationships with the people around you. Saudi society places a high value on courtesy, respect, and generosity, and small gestures of awareness go a long way. This Saudi Living guide walks you through the everyday etiquette that helps residents and newcomers move through daily life with confidence and consideration.
Greetings and personal interaction
The most common greeting is “As-salamu alaykum” (peace be upon you), answered with “Wa alaykum as-salam.” Handshakes are standard between men, and close male relatives or friends may greet each other with a cheek kiss. A few key points to remember:
- Always use your right hand for greeting, giving, and receiving items. Using the left hand is considered impolite across Saudi society.
- Men should not initiate physical contact with unrelated women. Wait for the woman to extend her hand first; if she does not, a polite nod or hand over the heart is appropriate.
- Keep your voice moderate and your gestures calm. Loud conversations, public arguments, and aggressive body language are frowned upon.
Dressing modestly
Modest dress is expected nationwide. As a minimum in public, wear loose-fitting clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Resort and dedicated tourist zones tend to be more relaxed, but conservative areas remain stricter, so it is best to observe what locals wear and adjust.
- Men should avoid shorts in markets and mosques.
- Women commonly wear an abaya or a long outer garment; carrying a light scarf is practical for stricter settings.
- Avoid tight or revealing clothing that accentuates the body shape, and steer clear of offensive slogans or imagery on clothing.
Behaviour in public
Public displays of affection between couples—such as kissing or long hugs—are discouraged and may attract negative attention. Holding hands is generally limited to family members or close friends. A few habits worth adopting:
- Do not show the soles of your shoes toward others, and avoid pointing your feet at anyone; it is considered disrespectful.
- In mixed or formal settings, many Saudis still prefer some gender separation or minimal physical proximity with unrelated members of the opposite sex.
- Where possible, avoid being alone in enclosed spaces such as elevators or cars with an unrelated person of the opposite sex.
Hospitality, homes, and the majlis
Hospitality is central to Saudi culture. Guests are warmly welcomed with Arabic coffee, dates, and sweets, often served with a sense of ceremony. Drinking several small cups signals your appreciation before politely declining more by gently shaking the cup.
- Remove your shoes before entering mosques and most Saudi homes. Clean socks are expected, and many people carry a small bag for their shoes.
- When invited to a home or majlis, bring a small gift such as sweets or dates. Repeatedly declining invitations can be seen as rude.
- Sit where you are directed, avoid pointing your feet at others, and never check the time while someone is speaking to you.
Photography and privacy
Privacy is taken seriously. Always ask for explicit permission before photographing people, especially women and families. In addition:
- Photographing government buildings, military sites, and certain infrastructure is restricted or prohibited.
- When in doubt, do not photograph—ask first, and respect a refusal without pressing further.
Respecting prayer times
Prayer is part of the daily rhythm of life. During prayer times, be considerate of those around you:
- Avoid walking directly in front of people who are praying.
- Do not take photos or make noise near prayer areas.
- Expect many shops and services to pause briefly during prayer; plan errands with these short breaks in mind.
None of these customs are difficult to follow, and Saudis are famously forgiving of honest mistakes made by newcomers who show respect and goodwill. Observe those around you, err on the side of courtesy, and you will find daily life in the Kingdom welcoming and rewarding.
