The Saudi Cabinet has added the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to the national committee responsible for investigating food-poisoning incidents across the Kingdom, broadening the range of authorities working together to protect public health.
With this addition, the committee now brings together the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, and the newly included Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
The committee is tasked with examining suspected food-poisoning cases, identifying the foods and causes behind each incident, and gathering information on affected individuals and the sources of the food involved. It also determines responsibility and submits recommendations on enforcement measures and penalties.
Why it matters
For residents and families in Riyadh, Jeddah and other cities, the move strengthens oversight at every stage of the food chain. Including the environment and agriculture authority means investigations can cover sources closer to farms and water supplies, not only the final point of sale or consumption.
Under existing procedures, suspected foodborne outbreaks detected by healthcare facilities are reported through the Ministry of Health's food-safety coordinators, with reporting required within 24 hours of detection. This rapid reporting helps authorities trace causes quickly and limit the spread of any outbreak.
No fee, application process, or online procedure is linked to this Cabinet decision, which focuses on strengthening the committee's membership and coordination.
