A final exit visa is the official authorization that lets a foreign resident leave the Kingdom permanently. Once it's issued, your iqama and sponsorship are cancelled, so it's a step you take only when you're genuinely ready to close out your time in Saudi Arabia. The good news is that the government service itself is free and, in most cases, fully electronic. This Saudi Living guide walks you through how the process works, the rules on validity and timing, and the key things to check before you request one.
What a final exit visa actually does
Unlike an exit/re-entry visa, a final exit is a one-way authorization. When it is issued:
- Your iqama (residency permit) is cancelled.
- Your sponsorship or employment link is ended.
- You are expected to leave the Kingdom within the visa's validity period.
Because it cannot be undone once you travel, make sure all your affairs — salary settlement, bank accounts, utilities, closing rentals, and end-of-service dues — are wrapped up first.
The fees: what's real and what isn't
The government fee for issuing a final exit visa is SAR 0. The service on أبشر and مقيم carries no government charge. Some intermediaries and typing offices, however, charge around SAR 70 as their own processing or service fee — this is separate from any official cost. If you handle the request yourself through your personal account, you can usually avoid that fee entirely.
How it's issued: the main routes
The path depends on your situation:
- Employer-initiated: For many private-sector employees, the employer ends the contract through قوى, then issues the final exit through مقيم or أبشر الأعمال.
- Family members and domestic workers: The sponsor issues the visa electronically through أبشر / أبشر الأعمال and مقيم under passport (Jawazat) services.
- Self-request: Under labor reform rules, a worker whose contract has expired or been terminated can request a final exit directly through their personal أبشر account via Passport Services → Final Exit Visa.
Requesting it yourself through Absher
If you're eligible to self-request, the system generally requires:
- Your employment contract is terminated or has expired.
- No vehicle registered under your name.
- All dependent visas already issued.
- An iqama with sufficient remaining validity.
When you submit a self-request, your employer has 10 days to approve or reject it. If they take no action, the request is automatically accepted after 10 days — and you must then issue the visa within 5 days. Keep an eye on these windows so you don't miss the issuance deadline.
Validity and iqama rules — read this carefully
Timing is where many people get caught out. The core rules:
- A final exit visa is generally valid for 60 days from the date of issuance, during which you must leave.
- Official guidance confirms the validity is 60 days regardless of iqama expiry, and departure within that window is mandatory.
- Jawazat requires a minimum of 30 days remaining on your iqama to issue the visa.
- If your iqama has between 30 and less than 60 days left, the visa duration equals your remaining iqama validity.
- If your iqama has 60 days or more, you get the full 60-day duration.
What happens if you overstay
Leaving on time matters. Overstaying beyond the final exit visa's expiry results in a SAR 1,000 fine, and you'll then need to cancel the expired visa before a new one can be issued — provided your iqama is still valid. This can turn a simple departure into a frustrating delay, so book your flight comfortably inside the validity window.
Your checklist before you request
- Confirm your contract status (terminated or expired) if self-requesting.
- Check your iqama's remaining validity — at least 30 days is needed.
- Cancel or transfer any vehicle registered in your name.
- Make sure all dependents have their visas sorted.
- Settle end-of-service, salary, bank, and utility matters.
- Verify the exact steps and any current requirements on the official Saudi government portals (أبشر, مقيم, or قوى) before you proceed.
Handled in the right order, a final exit is a straightforward, free, and mostly digital process. The trick is checking the details first — especially your iqama validity and the 60-day clock — so your departure goes smoothly.
