Ending your stay in Saudi Arabia — whether you are moving on to a new chapter or an employer is closing out a work relationship — usually runs through one final step: the final exit visa. It is the official record that clears you to leave the Kingdom for good and closes your residence file. The good news is that the service is fully electronic and free of charge, but a few conditions must line up before it can be issued. In this Saudi Living guide, we walk through the process step by step and, just as importantly, what you should verify before you even open the application.
What a final exit visa is (and what it costs)
A final exit visa authorises a resident to leave Saudi Arabia permanently. Once issued and used, your residence permit is cancelled. Two headline points matter most:
- Cost: Issuance is free — SAR 0.
- Validity: The visa must normally be used within 60 days of issuance. If you do not travel within that window, penalties may apply, so only issue it when your departure is genuinely close.
As of 2026, the service remains electronic and fee-free, with the visa duration tied to residence-ID validity when the ID has fewer than 60 days remaining.
How residence-ID validity affects the visa duration
The length of your final exit visa depends on how much time is left on your residence ID (Iqama):
- 60 days or more remaining: the final exit visa is limited to 60 days.
- More than 30 but less than 60 days remaining: the visa duration matches the time left on your residence ID.
- 30 days or less remaining: the visa cannot be issued until the residence ID is renewed first.
Check this before you apply
Most rejected or blocked applications come down to a condition that was not met. Confirm all of the following before starting:
- The person must be physically inside Saudi Arabia.
- The residence permit must be valid.
- Passport validity of at least 60 days.
- All applicable traffic fines must be settled.
- No valid visa may already be issued to the person.
- No unresolved violation for failing to cancel a previously issued, unused visa.
- The resident must not have a vehicle registered in their name.
- A registered fingerprint is required for males and females aged 15 and above.
- The resident must not be recorded as deceased, absent from work, or already outside the Kingdom.
- For workers, the employer must complete the required employment and residence-record procedures.
Where to apply
The right channel depends on who is issuing the visa:
- Individual residents and family sponsors: أبشر (Absher).
- Employers: Absher Business or مقيم (Muqeem).
- Employers issuing a final exit during a worker's initial 90-day probation period without an issued residence permit: Absher Business.
Step-by-step on Absher
For an individual or a sponsor issuing on behalf of a family member, the flow is straightforward:
- Log in to أبشر (Absher Individuals).
- Go to Electronic Services → Passports → Visa Services.
- Select the sponsored resident or family member.
- Choose Final Exit Visa.
- Review the conditions carefully, then issue the visa.
If you sponsor a domestic worker, use Employee Services instead: select the worker, choose Final Exit, accept the terms, and issue the visa.
Families travelling together
Where family members are included on the same passport, the primary visa holder must travel together with them. Plan your departure so the whole group leaves within the visa validity period, and double-check each person's records before issuing.
After the visa is issued
Once issued, don't assume everything is complete — verify it:
- Confirm the visa and its expiry date in أبشر (Absher) or مقيم (Muqeem).
- Make sure you and any included family members depart before the stated deadline.
- If plans change and you cannot travel in time, resolve the unused visa properly to avoid a violation that could block a future issuance.
Because specific figures and situations can change, always confirm current conditions and any potential penalties on the relevant official Saudi government portal — أبشر or مقيم — before you finalise your travel plans.
