The first birth of a striped hyena has been recorded at NEOM Nature Reserve in the Tabuk region, documented in August 2026 following the reintroduction of four individuals into the reserve in November 2025. The milestone marks a significant step in Saudi Arabia's efforts to restore native wildlife.
The birth is part of a rewilding and species reintroduction program led by the National Center for Wildlife in collaboration with NEOM, taking place within a protected reserve spanning roughly 25,000 square kilometres. Two breeding pairs were released into designated areas under veterinary supervision, with ongoing camera-trap monitoring and field follow-up.
The recorded event showed a female emerging from a den with a single cub, displaying normal nurturing and protective behaviour, with the cub reported to be in good health. Specialist teams continue long-term monitoring of the cub's growth as part of the national wildlife reintroduction strategy.
A growing conservation success
NEOM Nature Reserve has now reintroduced more than 1,300 animals from eight native species, with over 150 offspring born in the wild — including the striped hyena among priority carnivores. Research in Saudi Arabia in 2026 reports striped hyena population densities ranging roughly from 1.16 to 13.69 individuals offering baseline data for conservation planning across the Kingdom.
Conservationists note that striped hyenas face several threats in Saudi Arabia, including habitat degradation, wildlife-vehicle collisions, retaliatory killings, and persistent negative cultural perceptions. Efforts such as this reintroduction program aim to rebuild healthy populations and encourage a better understanding of the species' role in local ecosystems. The project is described as a conservation and monitoring initiative rather than a public tourism destination, with no visitor ticketing or entry procedures currently documented for the striped hyena area.
