Getting Around Hail: Transport Options Guide

Hail is a compact, easy-to-navigate city in the north of Saudi Arabia, and getting around it doesn't require much planning if you know your options. Unlike the larger metropolitan hubs, Hail has no metro or tram, and its public bus network is limited. For most residents and visitors, ride-hailing apps and car rentals do the heavy lifting, while the national rail line connects Hail to the rest of the Kingdom. Here's how to move around the city and beyond.

City buses

Public city buses in Hail exist but are limited in scope. They mainly run along key arterial roads, with low frequency and basic stops. There is no metro or public tram system in the city. Because of the limited coverage and timing, most people don't rely on buses for daily travel and instead choose ride-hailing or their own car.

Ride-hailing (Uber)

UberX operates throughout Hail with 24/7 on-demand service through the app. Note that only private-hire UberX is available — you cannot request conventional taxis through the app. Payment is handled entirely in the app using a card or other supported methods, and no government portal is needed to use the service.

Typical one-way UberX fares inside the city (dynamic pricing may vary) look like this:

  • Grand Mall: around SAR 14
  • Al Hadiqa Mall: around SAR 13
  • Al Rajhi Bank: around SAR 11
  • Hail SAR Train Station: around SAR 31
  • Prince Saud bin Abdulmohsen Park: around SAR 14

Street taxis

Conventional street taxis operate in Hail, but many do not use fixed meters. Fares are usually negotiated and agreed before you start the trip rather than being metered, so it's best to confirm the price upfront. There is no requirement to book street taxis through any government platform.

Car rental

Renting a car is one of the most practical ways to explore Hail and its surroundings. Multiple international and local rental companies maintain desks at Hail Regional Airport (HAS), south of the city, and branches inside the city itself.

  • Standard 2WD sedans are fine for city driving.
  • For desert and outskirts travel — such as heading toward Jubbah and the Nafud dunes — a 4×4 is usually required and comes at higher daily rates.

Bookings are made directly with the rental companies through their counters, websites, or apps. No government portal is used for rental booking or payment.

Intercity rail

Hail sits on the North–South line operated by Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), linking it to Riyadh, Al-Qassim, Al-Majmaah, and Al-Jouf/Qurayyat. The Hail passenger station is roughly 11–15 km from the city center, so factor in a short ride-hailing trip to reach it (around SAR 31 by UberX from the center).

Approximate journey times:

  • Riyadh–Hail: about 4–4.5 hours
  • Al-Qassim–Hail: about 2–2.5 hours
  • Al-Majmaah–Hail: about 3 hours
  • Al-Jouf–Hail: about 2–2.5 hours

Recent practice on the North–South line includes only limited morning departures, with most trains running later in the day. Ticket prices and exact timetables change, so always confirm current schedules and fares through the official Saudi Arabia Railways channels before you travel.

Which option suits you?

For short trips within the city, UberX is the simplest and most predictable choice. If you plan day trips to the desert or heritage sites like Jubbah, renting a 4×4 gives you the most flexibility. And for travel between cities, the SAR train is a comfortable, affordable alternative to driving — just remember to add time for the trip out to the station.
