Hail is a relatively compact city in the north of the Kingdom, and while it doesn't yet have a metro network, getting around it — or reaching it from other Saudi cities — is straightforward once you know your options. This guide from سعودي ليفنج walks you through everything from local buses and ride-hailing apps to intercity trains, flights and car rental, with typical fares to help you plan and budget.
Getting around the city
Within Hail city, you have a few practical choices depending on your budget and how quickly you need to move.
- Public city buses: Local buses run on a limited number of routes, with flat fares of roughly SAR 2–3 They're the cheapest option but coverage is not comprehensive, so check that a route serves your area.
- Ride-hailing: Both UberX and Careem operate citywide and are available 24/7, with upfront pricing shown in the app before you book. Short trips around town typically cost SAR 10–20, while the airport–city center run is usually SAR 35–55 depending on time and demand. You can pay by card, Apple Pay or cash, as enabled in the app.
- Street taxis: Traditional taxis operate without meters on many routes, so always agree the fare before you set off. Expect around SAR 10–25 for city-center trips and roughly SAR 40–60 between the airport and the city.
Reaching Hail by train
Hail sits on the North–South railway line, making the train a comfortable and reasonably priced way to travel. Passenger services connect Hail with Riyadh, Qassim, Majmaah and Al-Jouf/Qurayyat.
- Riyadh–Hail: about 4 hours 20–30 minutes, with typical one-way fares of SAR 90–180 depending on class and how early you book.
- Qassim–Hail: about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes, from around SAR 60–85 in standard class.
- Al-Jouf–Hail: about 2 hours 20–30 minutes, typically SAR 80–150.
Book online through the SAR e-channel via sar.com.sa or the SAR app. Tickets are valid only for the selected train, with limited same-day change options and fees. Note that timetables are released monthly, morning departures toward Hail and the north are limited, and many services run in the afternoon or evening — so book ahead and confirm the latest schedule.
Intercity buses
Intercity coaches connect Hail with major Saudi cities. As a rough guide, Hail–Riyadh runs about SAR 120–180 one-way, while Hail–Medina is roughly SAR 90–140. Tickets are usually valid only for the specific booked departure date and time, so arrive early and keep your booking details handy.
Flying to Hail
Hail Regional Airport (HAS) lies about 10 km south of the city center and handles regular domestic flights from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and other Saudi cities. Typical one-way economy fares (excluding promotions):
- Riyadh–Hail: around SAR 250–450
- Jeddah–Hail: around SAR 300–550
- Dammam–Hail: around SAR 300–550
Tickets are valid for the booked flight only; changing your date means airline change fees plus any fare difference.
Renting a car
If you want full flexibility — especially for exploring the wider Hail region — renting a car is a great option. Major rental agencies operate at Hail Regional Airport, so you can pick up a vehicle on arrival. Bring a valid driving licence accepted in the Kingdom and a payment card for the deposit, and always confirm insurance coverage before driving off.
Which option is best for you?
For quick, hassle-free trips inside the city, ride-hailing apps offer the best mix of convenience and transparent pricing. For inter-regional travel, the train is comfortable and good value, while flights save time on longer routes. If you plan to explore beyond the city, a rental car gives you the most freedom. Always confirm the latest fares and schedules on the relevant official Saudi portals before you travel.
