Worshippers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah continue to benefit from one of the world's largest cooling networks, which maintains indoor temperatures between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius across prayer areas throughout the day.
The system is operated through the Grand Mosque and managed by the authority responsible for the Two Holy Mosques. Its cooled-air network covers roughly 1.5 million square meters, extending across prayer halls, facilities, and open courtyards to provide comfortable conditions for the large numbers of visitors present at all times.
The network has an operating capacity of about 155,000 refrigeration tons, ranking it among the most powerful cooling installations of its kind. Beyond temperature control, the system also filters and purifies the air, with reported air-treatment efficiency reaching up to 95 percent.
Why it matters
For residents and pilgrims alike, stable temperatures and cleaner air make prolonged worship and movement inside the mosque far more comfortable, especially during peak seasons and the intense summer heat. The service is part of the public operating infrastructure of the Grand Mosque and is not a paid consumer service, so no fees, applications, or validity periods apply.
The scale of the cooling and air-treatment network reflects the ongoing effort to improve the experience of those visiting the holy site, ensuring safe and comfortable conditions for millions of worshippers year-round.
