Jeddah Islamic Port Sets Record Container Volume in July

Jeddah Islamic Port recorded its highest-ever monthly container throughput in July 2026, handling roughly 491,000 to 495,000 TEUs over 30 days and surpassing previous records set across 2025 and 2026. The port, operated by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), continues to strengthen its position as a key trade gateway on the Red Sea.

The milestone builds on steady growth. In June 2026, the port handled 457,344 TEUs, including 164,373 TEUs of imports and 142,072 TEUs of exports, reflecting momentum in both inbound and outbound trade. The port currently has an annual container handling capacity of around 10.2 million TEUs, with daily capability of about 20,000 containers and 10,000 trucks.

Jeddah Islamic Port operates two main container terminals equipped with 41 semi-automated ship-to-shore cranes, with berths able to serve up to 14 container vessels at once. Saudi Arabia has invested around SAR 641 million in upgrades, including new cranes, rubber-tyred gantries, terminal trucks and ground-handling units, alongside expanded yard capacity and additional shipping services added since 2025.

Customs and transit clearance are managed through the Fasah electronic platform and the systems of the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, which handle gate passes and documentation digitally. The digital shift aims to speed clearance and ease congestion. During a mid-2026 congestion period, yard utilization reached about 90%, truck queues stretched 5–6 km, and some containers faced release delays of up to six to eight weeks.

For residents and businesses, higher throughput and faster clearance can mean smoother movement of goods and greater reliability for importers and exporters. Sea freight spot rates to Jeddah rose sharply in July 2026, with 20-foot containers at roughly USD 5,085–6,215 and 40-foot containers at about USD 6,615–8,085 — market freight levels rather than official Saudi port or customs charges.
