Saudi Ports Handle 5.2M Containers Amid Disruptions

Saudi Arabia's maritime sector kept operations running smoothly through 2026, showing strong resilience despite ongoing disruptions to global shipping routes. The Kingdom's ports handled more than 5.2 million containers by the end of August 2026, underlining the sector's capacity to maintain steady trade flows.

During the year, more than 33 new maritime shipping services were added, connecting ports including Jeddah, Yanbu, and King Abdullah Port with markets in Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Djibouti, and Europe. These new links widened the Kingdom's trade reach at a time when many global routes faced delays.

Jeddah Islamic Port recorded a milestone in July 2026, handling 540,107 containers in a single month, a record figure that reflects rising throughput capacity at one of the country's busiest gateways.

Why it matters

For residents and businesses, reliable port operations help keep goods moving and reduce the risk of shortages or rising costs when international supply chains are strained. The Kingdom's integrated maritime, road, rail, and air networks played a key role in rerouting shipments and easing logistics bottlenecks during the disruptions.

To further strengthen capacity, port terminal investment agreements worth more than SAR 2.2 billion were signed to develop multipurpose cargo terminals at eight Saudi ports. The investments are expected to expand handling capabilities and support continued growth in trade across the Kingdom.
